A conspiracy theory before bed.

They start promoting the summer blockbusters Batman Begins and War of the Worlds.

Stars of both movies, Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, who are years apart in age and seem ill-suited for each other, begin dating.

Release dates draw closer. Tom Cruise goes on Oprah, et. al., generally making a fool of himself, pronouncing his love for Katie and churning up a big ole mess o' industry buzz.

The films in question start being released.

Tom and Katie GET ENGAGED (look at the rock on her finger below).

True love or conspiracy to generate more ticket sales for both?

There's only one thing clear from that picture: Katie Holmes is HOT.

Oh yes, Katie Holmes is quite hot. And yeah, the whole thing seems like a set up to some degree, but who knows. Either way, I won't be the least bit suprised if the marriage never goes through--or if it doesn't last long if it does.

Hell, even if not a stunt, the whole relationship seems ridiculous. But who knows.

Maybe I'm hopelessly naive, but how does this publicity result in increased ticket sales? I can't imagine anyone who cares about Tom Cruise doesn't know he's in War of the Worlds, and fanboys who drool over Katie Holmes were already going to see Batman...

I'd love to see an objective study of this kind of thing, to see if personal life turmoil of the stars really does increase ticket sales (or Nielsen ratings, or whatever)...
