Nocturnal yellow-bellied Slackbladder?

Posted by: Jim at July 22, 2005 12:02 AM

Close, but no.

A Hyena?

Posted by: Marti at July 22, 2005 09:02 AM

The yellow-eyed, tree-leaping ground shrew, aka the "Pipsquack" bird.

They taste like chicken!

I forgot to claim that posting about the "pipsquack"! Sorry!

Posted by: doug at July 22, 2005 09:42 AM

is it an opossum?

Posted by: jo at July 22, 2005 10:26 AM

It has opposable thumbs. So, I'm going to guess some kind of lemur (I was an anthropology major!). Is it an aye-aye? They are supposed to bring bad luck in Madagascar.

This thing is freaking me out. Would you kindly post the answer?

Posted by: Brooks at July 22, 2005 12:29 PM

I'm guessing some kind of sloth -- they come in a wide variety of ugly.

Posted by: Pete at July 22, 2005 12:39 PM

At first I thought it was a Chinese Crested puppy, but the ears are too big.

Then I thought it was a lemur. Same problem with the ears.

Hmmm....golden-rumped elephant shrew? Nose is too small.

I give.

It's a stobor!

Posted by: Barry at July 22, 2005 03:53 PM

It's not a sugar glider with a bad haircut, is it?

Posted by: folkbum at July 22, 2005 04:45 PM

I know I know -- It's a potfer.

Posted by: Ara at July 22, 2005 04:57 PM

What's a potfer?
Oh, wait, it's something to smoke.
Or something to cook things in.
Or something to call the kettle black.

As for the picture, it's a dead ringer for this chick Judy I used to work with. All I want to konw is how you got a picture of the shrew.

I read an old sci fi story concerning stobor once. Forget the title, but I remember it was a pretty good read.

Don Knotts?

Posted by: Alex at July 22, 2005 10:02 PM

My guess is it's a baby marsupial of some kind. The fur looks like possum. My kid thinks maybe a wombat.

The stobor were in Robert Heinlein's "Tunnel in the Sky", one of my favorites.

Or, rather, they weren't.

Posted by: Barry at July 23, 2005 01:09 AM

Thanks! I sort of thought the story was by Heinlein but couldn't remember the title. About a bunch of kids marooned on a planet when something went awry during their survival test, right?
